St Vincent de Paul Society

The Society of St Vincent de Paul exists worldwide to assist the poor and those in need, including migrants and refugees, people who are homeless or have health issues, or those just looking for friendship. St Brigid’s is the location of the founding Red Hill Conference, where the first of group of Queensland Vincentians met and planned their first act of charity responding to the needs of people affected by the Great Brisbane Flood of 1893. Today, it has more than 300 Conferences (or local branches) and more than 8,500 active members and volunteers.
In St Michael’s parish, the primary activities of the Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society are:
Members attend Conference meetings fortnightly in the parish Hall, to discuss ways to improve the assistance given within the local Conference area.
To support its activities the Conference depends upon donations from parishioners. In particular, day-to-day running depends on donations made to the Poor Boxes at weekend and weekday Masses. New members to the St Michael’s St Vincent de Paul Society would be warmly welcomed. JOIN US...
How St Vincent de Paul Society Operates
Visitation is an integral part of the Society’s work. This involves two Society members visiting people requiring assistance in their home and assessing their needs.
The members listen to the problems being raised and then offer support in whatever form is necessary. This support may include providing food or food vouchers, clothing, furniture, budget support, assistance with utility bills or back to school costs, information and advocacy.
The Society can offer material assistance through its network of stores operated by the Society, called Vinnies Centres, from which donated goods are resold or gifted. The Centres can provide a variety of goods including furniture, clothing and household goods to families and people who are in need and are being assisted by conference members.
These Centres are also a valuable resource for people on low incomes, enabling them to buy quality clothing, furniture and other household items at an affordable price.
Our volunteer members conduct home visitations to those in in the area who are in need, providing companionship, support and assistance to ensure the immediate necessities of life are met, most especially food and clothing, as well as other programs.
The St Michael’s Conference meets twice monthly for practical organisation of its work and for spiritual reflection and prayer.
Financial donations are received at the church and there is also a clothing donation bin on the church grounds.
You can arrange for the St Vincent de Paul Society warehouse to collect major items such as furniture, beds etc by calling 1800 VINNIES and choosing the ‘donate’ option.
If you require assistance, you can arrange a visit from our members by contacting the assistance hotline on 1800 VINNIES.
