Dorrington Men's Shed
Come Join Us! - Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 9 am - 1 pm
Not all Men’s Sheds are the same – if you looked inside you might see a number of men making furniture, perhaps restoring bicycles for a local school, making Mynah bird traps, fixing lawn mowers or making a cubby house for Camp Quality to raffle. You might also see a few young men working with the older men obtaining new skills and learning something about life from the men with whom they work.
You might see local elders making traditional weapons or designing arts and crafts. You will see tea-bags, coffee cups and a comfortable area where men can sit and talk. You will probably also see an area where men can learn to cook for themselves or how to contact their families by computer.

What is so special about the Men's Shed?
Most men have learned from our culture that they don’t talk about feelings and emotions, many do not take an interest in their own health and well-being. Unlike women, most men are reluctant to talk about their emotions and that means that they usually don’t ask for help. Probably because of this, many men are less healthy than women, drink more, take more risks and suffer more from isolation, loneliness and depression. Relationship breakdown, retrenchment or early retirement from a job, loss of children following divorce, loss of partner, physical or mental illness are just some of the problems that men may find difficult to deal with on their own.
The above paragraphs are copied from the Australian Men’s Shed Association. So in setting up our Dorrington Men’s Shed (DMS) we are not inventing the wheel. However, our “wheel” will have its own unique characteristics – we human beings are individually unique.
Presently some ten to twelve of our 22 strong membership socialize each Friday AM using the parish community hall facilities or progress the understory towards a proper shed status – lots of work benches and machinery expected to be a reality in the not-too-distant future.
Beginning our existence around September/October 2018, DMS is by now a formally established entity – we have already received valuable items of equipment and materials, the understory space has been enclosed to provide security and is already in regular use for ongoing projects. Thank you to many donors. But to further progress our development we will have to access grant monies. To be eligible for such grants DMS has had to acquire an ABN, a tax file number, and have Australian Mens Shed insurance cover.
DMS members are appreciative of our good fortune to have the use of St Michael’s parish hall as well as the understory space for our workshop. We are confident of continued development of DMS as a community social hub. As from Tuesday 12th March 2019, we will progress to a two day per week men’s shed - too much socialising and activity to fit into one morning! New members welcome of course - just drop in 9am – 12noon Tuesday or Friday and enjoy the casual friendly environment.
In recent weeks, we have been successful in receiving Grants from both the Queensland Government and the Australian Government. The Grants allow us to purchase a large range of Workshop equipment to be used for many different projects - some of this equipment has already arrived, and it appears in some of the attached photos.
We have also purchased the necessary computer, TV and communications equipment needed to run seminars, training and all sorts of audio-visual displays in the Community Hall. This equipment only arrived on the day the attached photos were taken, and the installation in the Community Hall is still a work-in-progress. We will be making this facility available to all current and future users of the Hall.
2020 Challenges
The Shed has 2 major challenges in the near future. We currently have a very small membership (Challenge 1) which leads to our current inability to do all the work that groups in our Community need from us (Challenge 2). We will continue to have problems with having sufficient funds to run the Shed until the membership increases (hence our Membership Drive).
