St Michael's Catholic Church

A Parish Community in Ashgrove

St Michael’s Catholic Parish, Dorrington sits prominently on Banks Street in Ashgrove, overlooking Brisbane’s CBD and inner north-west. From this position, the parish serves a growing and diverse local community, bringing people together in worship, prayer, and the life of the Church.

At the heart of parish life is the celebration of the Mass, supported by opportunities for prayer, formation, and service. St Michael’s is a place where faith is lived out in everyday life — through community, hospitality, and care for one another — and where all are welcome, whether long-time parishioners, new to the area, or simply visiting.

It all started when...

The parish of St Michael’s was established in 1952, when a small wooden church first served the local Catholic community. Father Sam Hunter was appointed as the first parish priest, and the parish quickly became a spiritual home for families in the growing Ashgrove area.

As the community expanded, the need for a larger church became clear. The current brick church was completed and opened on 17 May 1975, providing a permanent and fitting place for worship. The original wooden church remains part of the parish and continues to serve as the Parish Hall.

A War Memorial Church

Did You Know St. Michael's Church is a war monument?

Both the original and current church buildings at St Michael’s were dedicated as war memorials, with the present church standing in memory of “All Who Die in War.” This dedication reflects a deep sense of gratitude, remembrance, and prayer for those who have given their lives in service.

The memorial character of the church remains an important part of parish identity — a place not only of worship, but also of reflection, remembrance, and hope.

Our Patron: St Michael the Archangel

St Michael the Archangel, the patron of our parish, is honoured in the Church as a defender of God’s people and a leader in the battle against evil. His name means “Who is like God?” — a reminder of God’s power, justice, and protection.

As a parish community, we look to St Michael as a model of faithfulness and courage, seeking his intercession as we strive to live out the Gospel in our own time and place.
